It is not always easy to select a fantastic wine. There are a vast range of different types to choose from, from Chenin Blanc to Riesling, along with numerous others from all over the world, making it impossible to choose if you are not sure what you want.

If you are buying wine for another person, as a gift or to bring when invited to someone’s home for lunch or dinner, it is probably best to find out from the recipient or host what type of wine they prefer so that you avoid giving them a bottle that they are not going to enjoy. Regardless of how highly it is recommended, an expensive bottle of Merlot is going to be completely wasted on a person who adores nothing but Chardonnay.

Picking a bottle to suit your own personal preference is much less hassle. You just need to identify a bottle you love, award winner or otherwise.

During this period of experimentation when you are trying different types to work out what you like the most, don’t splash out too much any particular bottle of wine. There are very differing opinions about which wines can or should, be described as a fine wine. Lots of people categorise a fine wine by its price and consider anything over 10 to be a fine wine. To another individual, it is not a fine wine unless it costs more than 30.

One individuals perception regarding quality can be quite different to another. Many companies have gained a great reputation and market themselves as fine wine makers as a result of past excellence and not the quality of the product they bottle from one year to the next.

You can’t entirely depend on brand name as because of the nature of the industry, this cannot guarantee great results. The bottom comes to line when it comes to identifying a great bottle of wine, is individual preference. If you think a wine is fine, then that is your opinion and for you, it is!
